Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake is near Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Alberta Canada. I haven’t been to enough lakes in Canada, but of those I have this one is the most beautiful. When I lived in Canada many years ago a painting of this scene was on the back of the twenty dollar bill. I always thought that was Lake Louise which you can argue is equally beautiful and a somewhat similar landscape. It’s hard to impress you with how impossibly high these mountains rise above the lake, this picture does little justice to the real thing. My inadequate words aside, I’ll just leave it to your imagination, because that’s probably the only way to fathom the scale and majesty of this scene until you go there yourself.

Autumn Colors

I used to think Summer and Winter were my favorite but now I’m leaning towards Spring and Fall. I think the reason is that each bring tangible change that I can see all around. Don’t get me wrong, I love summer and all the fun things it brings but, in my humble opinion nothing compares to the Cherry Blossoms in Spring or the leaves in Fall. And all this from a guy that lives in Florida, go figure.

Irresistible Force

In Saint Joseph Parish in Barbados is Bathsheba Park and along the beach are these rocks eroded by the waves at the bottom. Water is one of the most powerful forces on the planet yet you can put your hand in it, swim in the warm waters of the tropics, take a shower, and it all seems so harmless. I think it’s one of those things that’s hard to fathom until you experience it’s force first hand. Reminds me of Niagara Falls, until you see it for yourself you really can’t imagine. But back to Barbados, the waters here seemed perfectly harmless, warm and inviting and the only force I was feeling was urge to take a nap in the shade.

Autumn Twigs

In Autumn I pay more attention to my surroundings, cold is coming. There are little queues which increase each day until one day I can’t ignore it. It’s not the end of the world, just dimming of the lights and I know what’s coming next. Autumn reminds me that time is ticking and I better get ready because once the clouds come and the rain starts we’ll all be in it for the long haul.

Hidden Beach

This was a recent sunset at Emerson Point in Manatee County, Florida. Emerson point is more about mangroves and wildlife than beaches. However, if you know where to look you can find a couple of secluded beaches like this one in and amongst the mangroves. The evening I shot this I had a couple of raccoons amble by. I think they were a little surprised since these little hideaways tend to be deserted, especially as the sun is going down. They decided to wait patiently from a few feet away as I took my pictures, probably wondering if I had any scraps of food to leave behind. The other thing I like about this spot is that we can bring our dogs here on a hot day. Most beach areas in Florida prohibit dogs, but since this isn’t strictly a beach, dogs are allowed and they love to wade in the shallow water to chase fish or just cool off.

Tangle Creek Falls

This last summer I took a trip down Highway 93, the Columbia Icefields Parkway in Alberta Canada. It’s no wonder it’s considered one of the most scenic highways in the world. I’ve been on Highway 1 in California and driven through Yellowstone in Montana and Wyoming, however never have I seen such breathtaking views for so many miles. This was just one of many stops and I think that if I didn’t have a day job I’d still be here photographing. Nonetheless, I’ll surely come back here, if not already in my dreams.

Lake Minnewanka

Don’t let the clear water and sunny day fool you, this water is about 3C/38F. For a guy from Florida that’s just about the temperature I want my drink to be, not my swim. Even so there were a few brave hearts jumping in this mid-summer day. Apparently the Canadian Coast Guard uses this lake for cold water rescue training. That’s good enough for me, …moving on. The mountains on the left have had prescribed burns and so the forest is healthy, vibrant and growing, however fire suppression on the right has left the soil acidic and unfit for wildlife. Even though the forest looks more healthy, it is not. In any case, I was fascinated about that fact. It seems that the more enlightened we become, the more we realize that mother nature had it all under control in the first place. Go figure.

Morning Walk

This is another shot of Emerson Point in Palmetto Florida. I love this place in the morning, it’s so quite and I’m likely to see Osprey, Eagles, Great Herons, any number of fish and a beautiful sunrise. The Parks department built these wooden walkways across the Mangroves to view the ecosystems at work up close. And when you’re done you can pickup a fresh Duncan Donuts coffee on your way home. Another morning in paradise, eh?

Robinson Dusk

Boy, I am such a procrastinator, like another shot I did of Robinson Preserve I got here just as the sun was setting below the tree line. If I was just ten minutes earlier, …but then again, maybe everything happens at the perfect time. So maybe this is the picture that was meant to be. I’ll never know but, in the end, this is what came out. Robinson preserve is a 487-acre preserve in Bradenton Florida and is the home of many species of wildlife, in short, a beautiful place for a walk.
