Hidden Beach

This was a recent sunset at Emerson Point in Manatee County, Florida. Emerson point is more about mangroves and wildlife than beaches. However, if you know where to look you can find a couple of secluded beaches like this one in and amongst the mangroves. The evening I shot this I had a couple of raccoons amble by. I think they were a little surprised since these little hideaways tend to be deserted, especially as the sun is going down. They decided to wait patiently from a few feet away as I took my pictures, probably wondering if I had any scraps of food to leave behind. The other thing I like about this spot is that we can bring our dogs here on a hot day. Most beach areas in Florida prohibit dogs, but since this isn’t strictly a beach, dogs are allowed and they love to wade in the shallow water to chase fish or just cool off.

Light in the Mirror

I’m not much of a furniture buff but place it in a castle and turn down the lights and suddenly my imagination seems to take over and I’m transported away from this world. Mostly I imagine the scenes of past ages playing out with me as a bystander, as though watching a movie or viewing a prior life. Certain music does that to me also, for instance when I listen to Loreena McKennitt scenes and emotions from a different place and time play out. So it is that when I take photos like this they are not so much about the furniture but the images they evoke in my mind and the portals they open to other worlds and other times. But then a hotel guest walks by in flip flops and I’m brought back into this world.

Sarasota Sunrise

As the sun rises in the east in Sarasota Florida it rises over the city. Most people think of Florida as a place to retire with warm weather year round. That’s true, but Sarasota has a younger crowd as well due to the colleges in the area, and so every morning before dawn the streets and bridges are full of people out for a jog or walk, or in my case, taking pictures of the sunrise. The waters are always clear, mostly warm, and you can’t go too far without running into a Starbucks. What’s not to like?

Trellis

This is the rose garden trellis in Vancouver’s Stanley Park. When I took this it was too early for all the roses to be in full bloom, nonetheless I thought the setting idyllic, especially when you consider that the bustling city is just a few short steps away. If you come here in the evening around dusk you can have the whole place to yourself. I can’t think of a better way to unwind from a busy day than walking through a rose garden in Stanley Park.

Dallas

I’ve been through Dallas hundreds of times at the airport but recently I stayed there for a couple of days. On that trip I had an hour to walk around downtown on a Sunday. My impressions were that it’s flat, lots of tall buildings, lots of glass, and deserted on weekends. I need to go back on a week day.
