Cottage On The Key

Cottage on the Key is one of a dozen or so eating establishments in Siesta Key, Florida. The character of the place speaks for itself. It seems to me that each place tries to be more laid back and quaint than the next. It makes for a great place to hang out, especially after sunset. Actually, I shot this while walking back to my car after watching the sunset. Jimmy Buffet would be proud. Someone fire up the blender.

Coquina Beach Walkway

This is a shot of the walkway to Coquina Beach on Anna Marie Island in Florida. This is a favorite beach of tourist and locals as the water is turquoise and the sand is like silk. When I shot this, just off camera to my right, a local had backed up his pickup truck and was enjoying a pot of crabs and shrimp while watching the sunset. Now tell me honestly, does life get any better than that?

Hidden Cortez

Not far from where I live is the little fishing village of Cortez. It’s such a small village you’ll pass it if you blink. However it’s home to generations of commercial fishermen as well as the US Coast Guard. The fish market is tucked away but if you find it there’s a little food stand out back where you can get fresh fried fish and a bottle of beer while you watch the fishing boats and Pelicans. Truly a hidden little gem, just don’t tell anyone I told you.

Sunrise Under The Bridge

The hardest part about taking this photo was waking up before sunrise. However I’m glad I did even if I had to struggle to stay awake during meetings this day. This is the Ringling Bridge in Sarasota Florida and is always filled with joggers from before dawn until long after sunset due partly to it’s scenic setting and to the fact that it provides a bit of a hill, of which we have very few in this part Florida.

Mote Sunset

This is a shot of the sunset near the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida. The Mote is a marine research facility in Sarasota Florida. They are generally making news regarding rescues of Manatee or other sea mammals as well as habitat and ecology of the seas. The evening I took this I saw a shark swim by and after I got over the shock I realized it probably wasn’t so unusual, the waters of the Gulf are teaming with all kinds of life and ecosystems. Lucky for us we have scientists and volunteers at the Mote dedicated to researching and preserving it.

Fort De Soto Lookout

This is a lookout used by spotters for the mortar battery used during the Spanish American War. Now I think the only thing you might look out for is a passing cruise ship or the sunset. Fort De Soto Park has camping, trails, kayaking, bike paths, and wind sailing to name just a few. However, the four legged members of our family like the dog park and beach where they can frolic in the waves on a hot day.

Nakomis Sunset

I can never get tired of Florida Gulf Coast sunsets. And apparently I’m not the only one, dozens of people showed up on this evening just to watch the sun go down. I don’t know why but it amazes me that people show up to watch the earth rotate to the point that our star is no longer visible. Maybe there’s something larger going on, or maybe I’m just over-thinking it. Probably a little of both.

Manatee Bridge

In Bradenton Florida you cross this bridge to get to Anna Marie Island and Holmes Beach. When the tide is moving the bridge is full of fishermen and it’s my understanding that the fish move with the tide, however don’t take my word for it as fishing is not one of my stronger suits. That’s a polite way of saying I suck at fishing. Even so I like to fish on occasion even if I’m only feeding the fish all my bait.
