Canadian Princess

Not until I looked closely did I realize this boat is stationary and now part of the Canadian Princess resort in Ucluelet, British Columbia. The boats in front are for fishing excursions during the day. One thing is for sure, the fish you get here is fresh, much fresher than anywhere save another fishing town. Food aside, I don't know why but when I see this boat I imagine it on the open seas and then I can't help but hear Gordon Lightfoot singing about the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. That can't be a good thing.

Break in the Clouds

I come here in Bradenton Florida to a place called Riverwalk several times a week to walk my dogs. We have a little routine of sitting on the dock for a spell and watching the sun set. On this day I brought a camera but we didn't get a sunset because of the clouds. So we started walking back and before we got off the pier I turned back to see this break in the clouds. Even though it's dark the light is shining through and in some way that seems like a metaphor for hope. Something nice about that don't you think?

Tampa Airport

Tampa is the airport I fly out of most often. Only the other night it wasn't me but my wife returning from a long trip. That afforded me the opportunity to park on the top level and take some long exposures. The lights at the top are jets landing on the runway behind terminal F. It was a lot of fun being at the airport and not necessarily having to travel. I wasn't the only one, others were up here watching the action snapping photos as well. A great way to kill an hour.

Victoria Harbour

A couple of weeks ago I was in Victoria which is the capital of British Columbia. Pretty much every night shot you see of Victoria features this parliament building. On this weekend they had a jazz festival, or maybe a boat show, or may both, I wasn't sure. But walking around the harbour there was live music coming from different directions and lots of folks out and a-boot (that's Canadian for about). I was standing here composing this and some people saw me with the tripod and said,

I was standing here composing this and some people saw me with the tripod and said, “hey man, are you shooting the show or just random?”. I thought about it for a few seconds and figured “random” was the right answer. So, in case you’re wondering, this is a random shot of Victoria at night.

Water Street Cafe

I'm in Vancouver this week and I was lucky enough to meet a local photographer +Suzanne Rushton for a bit of a photowalk. We toured Gastown which is the old section of town full of character. I love these little cafes on the back streets, seems like somewhere in Europe. I think I will come back here another evening and be that person in the cafe enjoying a long lazy repast of cheese and wine, all the while soaking up the evenings ambiance. If you ever come to Vancouver, give Suzanne a shout, she really knows this town and can help you get some amazing shots.

First Morning

On my first morning in New Zealand we were something like eight hours out of sync and so waking up early was pretty easy. I went outside before dawn and was rewarded with this. I've seen a lot of beautiful sunrises and sunsets in Florida and this rated way up there on the awesome scale. Maybe it was just a bit of luck but it felt supernatural. And supernatural magic seemed to follow us each day, it's hard to explain but while we were there it seemed very real. That is one trip you should put on your bucket list. I'm putting on my redo list.

After the Storm

All day it rained with thunder and lightning, but around dusk the storm lost it's vigor and I was able to get out for a walk with the dogs. With two leashes and only an iPhone at hand I captured this down by the marina. Figured I'd share it with you and wish you a great weekend.

Bridge to Somewhere

I captured this at dusk near the Skyway bridge to St. Petersburg the other day. There's a little highway rest stop and as I pulled up a couple of truckers were sitting in their cabs just watching this scene unfold in front of them. As rest stops go this is fairly scenic and each time I come here get inspired in some new way. If this seems to you like a relaxing scene you'd be right. Which is why I need to file this away before I start my week, otherwise I might not get anything done.

After the Golden Hour

This is the Fiorelli Winery just after dusk. I came here to capture a few shots for a brochure but the landscape photographer in me wouldn't let me leave without something a little more, well, ..landscape-y. It seems I'm always looking for something epic like the grand canyon even when I'm stuck in the middle of Florida. I suppose that's good and bad, but enough about me. It's been a long day and as soon as I type this I'm going to pass out on my keyboard. But before I do, I wish you all have a wonderful weekend.

Road to Glenorchy

Early one morning on the way to Glenorchy in New Zealand we stopped at a vista to watch the sunrise. As you can see the road has a lot of curves and I managed to capture this commuter on his or her way to work in Queenstown. As a rule I don't like to commute to work, but I think if I lived here I wouldn't mind so much. Kind of like when I get stuck on a drawbridge in Florida, just sit there and watch the dolphins swim by. No dolphins in New Zealand, just beautiful landscape and the occasional black swan. That'll do just fine.
