Queenstown Gardens

There is a park in Queenstown that seems to radiate with the morning light. And so it was this morning as twenty photographers gathered to capture the rare light of dawn. I captured this bridge just as the sun rose and we found ourselves in the midst of an overwhelming choice of compositions. This was one of many, but one I'll not soon forget.

Remarkable Day

Today was nothing short of remarkable. Which leads be to my second point, these mountains are call the Remarkables because they run directly north and south. I can just imagine that word out of the mouth of a British explorer, remarkable indeed sir. My musings aside, last evening and this morning were filled with rain, but above 900 feet it was snow and when the clouds finally cleared this morning we were presented with this, ...remarkable view. I came to this spot morning, noon and dusk, each time capturing a different light. This was around noon.

Columbia Ice Fields Parkway

Last summer I was along a highway in Alberta Canada and this was the view at every turn. If I had stopped at every photo opportunity I'd still be there now, and maybe that's not such a bad idea. But anyway, right now I'm on my way to New Zealand where I get to see mountains again and so I thought I post this to get me in the right frame of mind. Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

Bradenton Beach Dunes and Restoration

A few weeks back I took this picture of Bradenton Beach from the dunes. Actually I've been doing a lot of that lately, ...but anyway, I couldn't help but be impressed by how wide the beach was, in an unsettling way. Kind of like when you see someone that changed their appearance slightly but you just can't put your finger on it. After I took a bunch of shots I was walking back to my car and met some guy that asked me about my camera and tripod. Turns out he's the photographer in charge of documenting the beach restoration. What that means is that they added about fifty feet of beach out into the ocean since the last time I was here. Sure enough, when I got home and checked my GPS geotags on Google Maps using satellite imagery, a bunch of my shots where taken from in the water. He said that if they didn't do that every few years Anna Maria Island and this beach would disappear. Here is a link to a picture I shot of the same area with about fifty feet less beach. Kinda makes you think, doesn't it?

Emerson First Pond

I took this yesterday morning just after sunrise. It was too cloudy to get a good sunrise, nevertheless the soft light made for plenty of photo opportunities. This was at the first pond as you enter the park. Typically large wrens or egrets hang out here as it's relatively undisturbed, save the occasional over zealous photographer. This park is a wildlife sanctuary and whenever we get cold snaps up north many of the large graceful migratory birds use this as the Holiday Inn until they can return north.

Mangrove Sandbar

This is a mangrove that's taken over a sandbar just down the street from my home along the Manatee River in Palmetto. In the southern states along the Gulf Coast these mangroves are a natural defense against the erosion caused by hurricanes. As a result they are protected by the state and local governments. Basically you don't mess with them, just leave them alone and let them do their job. Anyway, I thought the calm water created by the sandbar made for a nice reflection. Have a lovely day everyone.

Terra Ceia Bay Fishing

If you want to get a few birds in your shot go find some fishermen. Actually, I'm not sure if he birds where here because of the fishermen or the other way around. In any case, the waters were full of fish and this seemed to be the place to be, bird or human. This is just by the bridge in Terra Ceia Florida.

Tree of Light

A few weeks ago I captured this tree in Maximo Park, St Petersburg Florida. Actually I copied my wife who was already taking a picture of this tree. I do that, copy other people, especially people that are smarter or more creative than me. But hopefully I learn, little by little. Anyway, the park is also a Frisbee golf course. I'm not sure when that was invented, but it seems the same rules apply and since I suck at golf, maybe I should try Frisbee golf. Anyway, while I was composing this shot, uh, copying my wife who composed the shot, I notice a Frisbee fly by. It was then we figured out we were standing in the fairway. We both got our shot, moved on, ...and nobody yelled

Glow of the Grass

I took this a a few months back at Robinson Preserve. Fast forward to now and I'm thinking that maybe as soon as this rain clears I'll come back here to see what I can see. Since it's raining today, the preserve should have all kinds of puddles, and as the rain moves out we should have some good clouds. But that's just me thinking out loud, or in type, ...whatever. Florida is flat and landscape pictures are all about the ground and / or the sky, no mountains or hills to chime in. So now that I have my idea, I'll be outta here..., happy Friday everyone.
