Van Wezel

This is the Van Wezel Performing Arts center in Sarasota Florida. Aside from being one of the best venues in the region, it has some pretty cool architecture which, in my opinion, enhances the feel of Sarasota. I took this one afternoon when we had typical storm clouds in the area but decided to go with the dramatic feel. Besides, performing arts includes a lot of drama.

Coquina Beach Walkway

This is a shot of the walkway to Coquina Beach on Anna Marie Island in Florida. This is a favorite beach of tourist and locals as the water is turquoise and the sand is like silk. When I shot this, just off camera to my right, a local had backed up his pickup truck and was enjoying a pot of crabs and shrimp while watching the sunset. Now tell me honestly, does life get any better than that?

Hidden Cortez

Not far from where I live is the little fishing village of Cortez. It’s such a small village you’ll pass it if you blink. However it’s home to generations of commercial fishermen as well as the US Coast Guard. The fish market is tucked away but if you find it there’s a little food stand out back where you can get fresh fried fish and a bottle of beer while you watch the fishing boats and Pelicans. Truly a hidden little gem, just don’t tell anyone I told you.

False Creek

All of Vancouver is amazing, but especially the False Creek section. When I shot this the area was full of photographers and wedding parties. Kind of reminds me of Pelicans back home in Florida. Where there’s Pelicans, there’s fish, you can always tell. In Vancouver, where there’s photographers there’s really cool stuff to see. Okay, I know that’s a really lame analogy, but it’s true.

Mote Sunset

This is a shot of the sunset near the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida. The Mote is a marine research facility in Sarasota Florida. They are generally making news regarding rescues of Manatee or other sea mammals as well as habitat and ecology of the seas. The evening I took this I saw a shark swim by and after I got over the shock I realized it probably wasn’t so unusual, the waters of the Gulf are teaming with all kinds of life and ecosystems. Lucky for us we have scientists and volunteers at the Mote dedicated to researching and preserving it.

Lost Lagoon 4

The reason I call this “4” is because I’ve taken three other shots from this same location. I try not to repeat myself, but on occasion I can’t help it. I took this night before last when walking back to my hotel through Stanley Park in Vancouver. The path was pretty much deserted, and I found out why after I setup, lots of mosquitos. In any case, this is a typical evening glow that residents of this city enjoy. No wonder everyone is so mellow here.

Residence Inn Lobby

This is the lobby of the Residence Inn in Vancouver. I only stayed here once but my first impression was that “it’s not your father’s” Residence Inn. Apparently it was recently renovated and the rooms where all state of the art, very clean and modern. Late one night when I came in from a photo walk I took this while the lobby was empty. I think I caught the hotel manager by surprise as I setup my tripod. In any case, once I got the picture I headed up to my room to use the state of the art microwave to make a bag of popcorn.

Night Reflection

When I take the time to look up when walking at night in a big city I’m always surprised at what I see. That comes partially from my developing a sense of as photographer and partially from living in a small town where the tallest thing around is a Palm Tree. In any case, this was the last photo I took one night while on what should have been a short walk from the subway back to my hotel in Vancouver. The problem of course is that I kept looking up and seeing interesting scenes like this. It ended up a late night.

Nakomis Sunset

I can never get tired of Florida Gulf Coast sunsets. And apparently I’m not the only one, dozens of people showed up on this evening just to watch the sun go down. I don’t know why but it amazes me that people show up to watch the earth rotate to the point that our star is no longer visible. Maybe there’s something larger going on, or maybe I’m just over-thinking it. Probably a little of both.
