Quite the Scene

I can be a real geek sometimes; like this time. I had it in my mind I was going to take some epic photos and so I brought a bag full of gear including a huge lens and a tripod. Things didn’t turn out as I expected so there I was with all this gear in the middle of a public pathway as the sun was setting. I made the best of it and quickly setup for the shot. A couple came up and said they wanted to be on TV. Obviously I looked like I was from the local …

Waterfall from British Columbia

Rick canada, Landscape, Nature, SonyAlpha, travel, Vancouver 0 Comments

I was flipping through some old photos and I found this waterfall from British Columbia. What caught my attention was that it was taken exactly three years ago today. This is just below the massive Shannon Falls north of Vancouver. When I took this it was in full flow from the spring runoff, so I imagine it would be the same now. Daily Image I took this with the Sony A7R, which was still fairly new at the time. I had had it for only a couple of months and was still learning its ins-and-outs. Looking at this now makes me …

Weekend State of Mind

Rick beach, Florida, Landscape, Manatee County, Nature, Night Photography, nightphotography, SonyAlpha, Sunset 0 Comments

I post a lot of sunset images because it’s one of the main attractions of the area I live in. If the conditions are right on a Friday or Saturday its even better because it seems everyone is in the same kind of weekend state of mind. Any evening can be good but Fridays and Saturdays have their own special quality. Daily Image Last weekend I took a little hike to this secluded beach. Other than that you need a boat to get here. These people were taking pictures of the sunset and had a boat. I, on the other …

Lookout Tower

Rick Schwartz Florida, Landscape, Manatee County, Nature, SonyAlpha 0 Comments

This is from Robinson Preserve in Bradenton. The reflection of the lookout tower caught my attention as I rode a bike along a trail. Normally the water is not this still during the day but there was no breeze on this warm winter day in February. Daily Image These towers appear in most Florida nature preserves and state parks. I realize now it’s because the land is flat and a tower is the only way to see over the ground cover. I’d never seen these where I grew up in California because they have mountains and all you have to …

Little Beach with a View

Rick Schwartz beach, Florida, HDR, Landscape, Manatee County, Sunset 0 Comments

This is an image of the mangroves in Palmetto near my home. It’s a little hidden beach not far from the road. I never knew it was there until I noticed a trail leading into the bush. Much to my surprise there’s a little beach with a view of the sunset. Daily Image It’s been said that photographers should first learn to shoot images around their home before venturing out. Years after hearing that I have to agree. In my case the more I explore the more I discover. It’s amazing how many things we overlook when we’re not looking. …

Canal to the Intercostal Waterway

Rick Schwartz bridge, Bridges, canal, Florida, Manatee County, Night Photography, nightphotography, SonyAlpha 0 Comments

To took this picture as I stood over a canal to the intercostal waterway. I was in the village of Cortez where there are many little outdoor restaurants by the water. Its one of my favorite places to come for an authentic Florida experience. Daily Image This bridge is one of two that cross over to Anna Maria Island. Both are draw bridges and each time I cross I secretly hope to get stuck. The draw bridge takes five or ten minutes to operate and during that time you turn off the engine and watch the sailboats, dolphins and fishermen. …

Burden of Beauty

Rick Schwartz Florida, Landscape, Macphun, Nature, photography, Sarasota, SonyAlpha, Sunset 0 Comments

When I see a scene like this I want to capture it with my camera. That’s great if I have my camera, it’s stressful if I don’t. Its what I call the burden of beauty. Photography has opened my eyes so I am more aware of what’s around me. When I see something interesting or pretty the inclination is to take a picture. So now I not only appreciate more, I want to capture it. As problems go I suppose its a good one to have. Daily Image I took this in Sarasota last week as the rain clouds were …

Where the Land Ends

Rick beach, california, Landscape, Macphun, Nature, san francisco, SonyAlpha, Sunset, travel 0 Comments

If you drive west in San Francisco you eventually end up where the land ends. Appropriately name Lands End is a required stop when I’m here. On Monday I had a red-eye back flight home and so that afforded me the perfect opportunity to spend a couple of hours here before heading to the airport. I am so glad I did. Daily Image Staying in the heart of the city its easy to get disconnected from nature and the beauty that surrounds this part of California. I was feeling a little bit of that when I arrived. But as soon …

Foggy Night at the Dock

Rick Florida, Manatee County, Night Photography, nightphotography, photography, SonyAlpha, Urban, urbanexploration 0 Comments

This is a foggy night at the dock in Bradenton Florida. We get fog at certain times of the year and it typically lasts only for a couple of weeks. It will roll in at night and blanket the area. I’ve been waiting for it since last year so I headed on a recent evening to capture some images. Daily Image The fog makes everything look mysterious, like a scene from a movie. Even the simplest of scenes take on a sense of intrigue. Street lights form triangular shapes as they fan towards the ground, and in this case are …

Dawn on the North Pier

Rick bridge, Bridges, Florida, Landscape, Manatee County, Night Photography, nightphotography, SonyAlpha, Sunset, Tampa 0 Comments

I took at dawn on the north pier which is where all the local fishermen hang out. The pier is the remnants of the old bridge that was replaced by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. To get out here you need to pay a fee to the parks department. Everyone that pays that fee comes here to fish, I’m the only one that comes here to take pictures. When I show up before dawn without a fishing poll I get a few sideways glances. Daily Image I’ve taken pictures of this bridge from a lot of angles but this is my …
