Wickaninnish Beach, BC

This is a shot of the mist on Wick beach in British Columbia. Actually the name of this place is Wickaninnish, but folks around here just call it Wick. In any case, this is at the southern end of a very long beach that stretches for miles up the coast. There is a WWII memorial here as well as a lodge with a restaurant that has a few local dishes on the menu. It was a chilly day so we asked for comfort food and we got a local favorite. I can’t begin to remember the name of it but it seemed to have fish and rice all mixed in and it really hit the spot. This area is known for surfing, fishing whale watching. Or, if you’re like me, just long walks on a long beach followed by comfort food.

Cathedral Grove: A Quiet Path

Cathedral Grove Path

Last year I stopped here at Cathedral Grove just outside of Nanaimo British Columbia. These are towering Douglas Firs, the oldest at about eight hundred years old though most are around three hundred years. Even with visitors, the lush vegetation dampens the sounds to provide a quite walk through the old forest. There are a lot of must see places on Vancouver Island, this is at the top of the list. I was here in summer when it was hot, even so the cover the canopy creates its own micro-climate and the whole place is about ten dregs cooler. The grove is reached by a highway leading over the mountains to the pacific coast. I was on my way there to Ucluelet, but even so when I came back I stopped here again. I took a ton of pictures both times.

Driftwood House in Ucluelet, BC

This driftwood house is along the Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet. The West coast of Vancouver Island looks a lot like this, rugged coves, black rock and driftwood. I'm not sure who constructed this but it was no small undertaking. Maybe not a posh resort, but if you consider the mountains, ocean and stars at night it comes pretty close. In my estimation the only thing it needs is a campfire and some marshmallows.

Afterglow at Chesterman Bay

I took this from Chesterman Beach near Tofino in British Columbia. It's no wonder so many artists live in the area, no matter where you look there is some icon of nature waiting to be painted, carved or sculpted. If you look there's beauty wherever you go, but here on Vancouver Island it jumps right out at you. Very little effort required.

Little Qualicum Falls

On the road to the west coast of Vancouver Island I stopped at this provincial park with a set of waterfalls. It's such a beautiful setting that a week later on my way back I stopped in again. This is one of the images from my first visit which was taken from a footbridge above the rushing water. Something about being immersed in the forest next to a waterfall is rejuvenating and relaxing at the same time. If you ever get out that way be sure to stop in at take a look. I'm certainly glad I did.

Chesterman Beach

This is Chesterman Beach on the west coast of Vancouver Island. For a rugged coast it sure has it's share of long beaches. I guess it has the best of both worlds and that's probably why it attracts such an eclectic crowd. There are several of these scattered along the coast and at each one you'll find surfers of all ages. I'm serious, I saw a couple of grandpas out there. And good on them, I cannot imagine a better way to spend my golden years.

Inlet Isle

We passed this little isle on the way out to the pacific from Ucluelet, BC. I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if spirits of the first nations ancestors inhabit this spot. Its passed by countess vessels each day, and if I lived here I'd probably ignore it, but I don't and so it caught my attention. Nonetheless I think it's relatively undisturbed and the perfect place to dwell, in mind or spirit.

Ucluelet Inlet

While returning from whale watching afternoon fog started rolling in and as we passed little inlets like this it created a misty, almost mysterious scene. I think the combination of ocean, mountains and inlets makes for a lot of little micro climates. You can never how the weather will change, only that it will. Little islands like this could have sea lions or otters, but on shore it's not uncommon to see bears in search of food. In fact I did see a three year old black not far from here earlier in the day.

Canadian Princess

Not until I looked closely did I realize this boat is stationary and now part of the Canadian Princess resort in Ucluelet, British Columbia. The boats in front are for fishing excursions during the day. One thing is for sure, the fish you get here is fresh, much fresher than anywhere save another fishing town. Food aside, I don't know why but when I see this boat I imagine it on the open seas and then I can't help but hear Gordon Lightfoot singing about the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. That can't be a good thing.
