Fortunate Enough

Rick Schwartz Florida, HDR, Macphun, Manatee County, Night Photography, nightphotography, photography, SonyAlpha 0 Comments

This is a long exposure of the marina in Palmetto. Once the sun goes down the glow on the horizon fades for about an hour. The last few minutes of the glow are almost imperceptible yet appears more pronounced with a long exposure. This is image is eight-seconds and of course was taken with a tripod. Because the glow is more pronounced it contrasts with the night sky directly overhead. It’s a unique lighting situation that I was fortunate enough to capture. The scene is enhanced even more by the color of the thin clouds above the boats. Daily Image …

Canal to the Intercostal Waterway

Rick Schwartz bridge, Bridges, canal, Florida, Manatee County, Night Photography, nightphotography, SonyAlpha 0 Comments

To took this picture as I stood over a canal to the intercostal waterway. I was in the village of Cortez where there are many little outdoor restaurants by the water. Its one of my favorite places to come for an authentic Florida experience. Daily Image This bridge is one of two that cross over to Anna Maria Island. Both are draw bridges and each time I cross I secretly hope to get stuck. The draw bridge takes five or ten minutes to operate and during that time you turn off the engine and watch the sailboats, dolphins and fishermen. …

Miami to Dallas

Rick Schwartz beach, Florida, Landscape, Manatee County, Night Photography, nightphotography, photography, SonyAlpha, Tampa, travel 0 Comments

I took this one night on a pier facing the Gulf of Mexico. I only noticed the streak of light after I returned home. If I had to guess I’d say it’s a commuter flight from Miami to Dallas. Sometimes when I travel out west, I go to Miami first and then fly back over my town in central Florida. I have no way of knowing for sure. Daily Image I sat on this pier, the only person at the beach in the late hour, aiming at the heavens with my camera and tripod. At fifteen-seconds, this is a relatively …

Morning Across the River

Rick Schwartz Florida, Landscape, Manatee County, photography, SonyAlpha, Sunset 0 Comments

I remember taking this one morning across the river. I recently posted a similar shot from the same morning. This is a long exposure of about three minutes so that everything appears smooth and serene. That’s a theme with me, gravitating toward images that convey still and calm; that’s probably a response to living in a frenetic world. Daily Image Often when I come here in the morning to shoot a sunrise the joggers and walkers will remark to me about what a nice shot I’m getting. They have that subtle pride of ownership in their voice as though they are …

Sarasota Skyline from Afar

Rick Schwartz bridge, Florida, Landscape, Night Photography, nightphotography, Sarasota, SonyAlpha, Urban, urbanexploration 0 Comments

The Sarasota skyline from afar is something I never get tired of. This is about a mile away. I took this while standing near a boat launch on City Island. Daily Image This happened to be one of the few times of the year it was cold and windy. That’s great for this type of photography because the air is crisp and the clouds blur against the sky when the exposure is long. The only difficulty is getting the camera to remain steady against the winds. I have a good tripod but sometimes that’s not enough. In this case I …

Manatee Memorial Hospital

Rick Schwartz Florida, HDR, Landscape, Macphun, Manatee County, Night Photography, nightphotography, Urban, urbanexploration 0 Comments

This is the Manatee Memorial Hospital which is across the river from my home. I don’t normally take pictures of hospitals but this perspective across the water was hard to pass up. Reflections make anything look good, it could be a Walmart and if it was reflected in the water I’d probably take a picture of it. Daily Photo I am fortunate to live so close to a hospital, you never know when it will come in handy. Its come in handy a few times for family and neighbors since I moved here. My wife stayed here once and every …

A’DAM Lookout

Rick amsterdam, europe, netherlands, Night Photography, nightphotography, SonyAlpha, travel, Urban, urbanexploration 0 Comments

This is a three minute exposure of the EYE Filmmuseum and A’DAM Lookout. Below the lookout is a giant sign that says “I amsterdam”. The lookout is one of the few places in the city you can get high enough to see everything. It has a lounge below the observation deck so can view and remain cozy inside. I took this just after arriving from Florida wasn’t used to the cool air. I tend to block out the weather when I’m taking pictures. I stayed out for two or three hours before going back to the hotel. I needed of …

Midnight Along the Canals

Rick amsterdam, bicycle, bikes, bridge, Bridges, canal, europe, netherlands, Night Photography, nightphotography, SonyAlpha, travel, Urban, urbanexploration 0 Comments

I took this while walking after midnight along the canals of Amsterdam. There aren’t many places in the world I feel safe walking late at night, but this city is one. Maybe I am naive, but it’s a good sign when you see all manner of people out walking at the same late hour, as though it was a perfectly normal thing to do. As I write this I am returning from a major American city where I spent a few days. To be honest I would not walk alone at night in that city. But Amsterdam is different in …

Dawn on the North Pier

Rick bridge, Bridges, Florida, Landscape, Manatee County, Night Photography, nightphotography, SonyAlpha, Sunset, Tampa 0 Comments

I took at dawn on the north pier which is where all the local fishermen hang out. The pier is the remnants of the old bridge that was replaced by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. To get out here you need to pay a fee to the parks department. Everyone that pays that fee comes here to fish, I’m the only one that comes here to take pictures. When I show up before dawn without a fishing poll I get a few sideways glances. Daily Image I’ve taken pictures of this bridge from a lot of angles but this is my …

Sarasota Skyline One Afternoon

Rick Florida, Landscape, Macphun, Sarasota, SonyAlpha, Urban, urbanexploration 0 Comments

This is a two-minute long exposure of the Sarasota Skyline one afternoon last month. Looking at the file info for this image I see it was taken at 5:43pm. This was obviously before we set the clocks back because now the sun goes down at 5:30. Funny thing about photography is it causes me to notice little details like that. Daily Image On one level photography is a mechanical process, take a picture and preserve a moment. On another level the practice of photography is a way of becoming present in the moment and aware of my surroundings. One way …
