Siesta Key is a little village not far from where I live. Funny thing is I find the only time I go there is when guest come to town. In an effort to turn that around I headed there to shoot the sunset last week and I enjoyed it so much I’m planning on going back, hopefully before our next guests arrive.

The Whole Shebang
I call this the whole shebang because this has a bunch of my favorite elements all in one shot. On this evening the rain has stopped long enough to give a hint of sunset over False Creek in Vancouver. The rowing crew had just finished and as I approached I noticed that several other photographers were here for this shot as well. I briefly chatted with one photographer who was from Germany, and boy was he serious. But then I can appear serious also well when I have fading light. If I’m “in the zone” trying to make the best of those in-between minutes before nightfall, someone might remark that I’m too serious. In any case, I suspect there is a similar photo in Germany, taken from about the same spot with a lightly more serious look and feel.

Tortouga Gazebo
I took this from Bradenton Beach about a day after the first named storm of the year. In Florida we have a semi-tropical climate and so our summer is almost like winter meaning we get a lot of storms. Of course, afterwards the clouds are awesome and everyone, and I mean everyone, is down by the beach at sunset taking photos and wishing it would never end.

Coquina Pier
This was taken atop what’s left of the Coquina Beach pier on Anna Marie Island, Florida. While the pier is slowly giving way to the elements, local fishermen and birds still use it daily. I love the blue green waters of the Gulf of Mexico, they’re always clear and inviting which explains why we have so many visitors to this area year round.

Hidden Bridge
Actually this bridge isn’t hidden at all, it’s crossed by thousands of pedestrians and cyclists daily at the entrance to Stanley Park in Vancouver. I’ve included a Google Maps Link to this spot to get another perspective. It’s such a scenic little spot that at the same moment I came here to capture this, another photographer was setup not five feet away pointing in the opposite direction. I always try to smile and make conversation when I met other photographers, but it’s been my experience those with tripods are serious, absorbed in their craft and not likely to chat much. Either that or I look a little weird, …the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

Nokomis Lookout
Obtain a print
This is the lifeguard lookout stand in Nokomis Florida. When I came upon this I noticed a gentleman sitting on the stairs in quiet contemplation. I’m pretty self conscious so I did my best not to make too much noise while taking this picture. The clicks on my camera can be a little annoying, so after I got the shot I quickly moved on to leave the soul in peace.
Holding Pattern
A holding pattern is exactly what Flight 500 was in when I took this. It was getting close to sunset and being stuck in a window seat I figured I’d make the best of it by pulling out my camera. I think the guy sitting next to me was a little amused, nonetheless each time my side faced west I had this view of the sun setting over the Gulf of Mexico. Of course once we landed there was no sun to see, just typical afternoon thunder showers in Tampa, Florida.

Lower Longboat
Thousands of little fish, I’m not sure what they’re called, swim close to the surface and the birds along the waterways are more than happy to scoop them up. This is the southern tip of Longboat Key near Sarasota Florida. Late afternoon is a great time to be close to the water as you’ll always see something interesting and unexpected. The day I took this I saw a six or seven foot shark about a hundred feet off shore (in an area not too close to the beaches). As I said, interesting and unexpected.

Magic Dusk
Minutes after a sunset are sometimes the best to enjoy; the light of dusk on an ocean shore on a warm day is simply exquisite. I think that if I didn’t have a real job, I might just spend every evening by the beach capturing sunsets at dusk. But for now, the occasional picture is enough to keep me happy. Cool Patio
This is an empty patio during sunset on Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver. Now that we’re headed into summer, I suspect this patio is busy in the evenings and a perfect spot to watch the sun go down over the Canadian peaks and into the Pacific. I had so much fun taking this that whenever I’m in Vancouver I look up to this point from the city below and wonder what the scene must look like. I guess I need to head back up there soon.
