Sarasota Ringling Bridge

Happy hump day everyone, I thought I'd show a bridge to get us through Wednesday. A lot of images come to mind when I think of Sarasota, but the most iconic is this bridge of which I've take dozens of shots and I'll probably take dozens more. To me the atmosphere here is unique and unlike any place else. This is the Ringling Bridge, Harts Landing bait shop and of course the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. There's a lot more to Sarasota that I'll be getting to little by little, one day at a time. Hang in there people, we're halfway there, Friday is just around the corner.

Soaking Up Rays

For me Friday usually brings with it a feeling of relief, like wow, I made it through another one. Maybe it's time to kick back on a bench and soak up some rays. Actually this lady was checking e-mail on a phone, but never-mind that, she got most of it right. Of course I was standing right behind her clicking away, but never-mind that also. Let's all just take a minute and turn down the e-mail dinger on our smartphones and go to that quite place if just for a few minutes. Who am I kidding, I wouldn't last 10 minutes. But hey, it's Friday and I'm feeling better already. Happy Friday everyone.

Sony in the Park

This is lazy afternoon in Sarasota Florida. I'm getting the hang of my Sony camera, it's a big switch from the Nikon. There are things I like about the Nikon including the lenses, but Sony seems to be writing a new page in the book of camera evolution. The biggest difference is the size, it's so much smaller than a comparable Nikon or Canon. Which brings be to today's photo. I shot this while walking my two dogs at Island Park and it was pretty easy. I've tried this with the bigger Nikon and it wasn't so easy. With a small camera you seem to have more options and flexibility and, just kind of blend into the background. And that, might just lead to more opportunities to capture life and beauty all around. In my opinion, Sony has done with the camera what they did with the Walkman so many years ago. Thank you Sony.

Bait Shop in Sarasota

This is the tackle shop at Hart’s Landing in Sarasota Florida. As long as I live I’ll never get tired of taking photos from this area. It’s one of those rare urban places where you can get a good photo no matter which way you turn. Something about us humans, we love to fish. Something about places where people fish, they seem to make for good photography. I have no idea why this is, or even what I’m talking about, but it seems to me we must have a strong connection to the water. Why else would we like to look at it so much? Before I start going off into space, I just want to wish you all a great day and hope that you get a chance to go by the water sometime soon. If not, this’ll have to do for now. 😉

Dusk Under the Ringling

I have a disproportionate number of photos of the Ringling Bridge in Sarasota Florida, after all it’s an area icon and I just can’t resist. This was the last shot one evening a few weeks back. On this evening I was in “the zone” and just did’t want to stop and had to mentally slap myself to break the spell. Nothing wrong with enjoying photography, it’s just that I was on the hook to bring home take out. Nonetheless, on any given evening this pier is filled with local fishermen, tourist out for an evening stroll and sometimes the occasional photographer fighting against the clock.

Sailboat Sunrise

A couple friends of mine packed up their belongings, bought a sailboat and moved to Tahiti. That sounds lovely doesn’t it? These boats however are closer to my home in Florida, this is Sarasota at sunrise. As I took this I wondered what it would be like to wake up to the rocking of the boat. Not something I know from experience, but my guess is I’d probably sleep in a little longer as I was rocked by the gentle motion of the waves. I would imagine that’s just what the inhabitants of these boats where doing as this land lubber sat onshore with a camera wondering what it would be like.

Venice Pier

This is the Venice Pier which is attached to Sharky’s on the Pier in Venice Florida. A couple of wooden versions of this washed away in hurricanes and so they built this newer stronger concrete version. It’s such an iconic setting that we always bring guests here. When my sister-in-law was down she lamented she hadn’t seen any dolphins, however the day we came here we spotted a small pod frolicking at the end. Florida’s west coast is dotted with establishments like this, but this is one of our favorite. Everything just seems to add up.

Through The Palms

As I write this there are storms across much of the Unites States and winter has made an early entrance. But in some places such as Florida’s west coast you can still find people on the beach or enjoying a sunset. It’s no wonder the population of Florida explodes this time of year. If I lived up north and had the means I’d come down here also. Fortunate for me I live here and this weekend I was outside at the Sarasota Fine Arts Festival. This shot is from just south of Sarasota in Nokomis which is a community with an awesome beach among other things. Anyway, at the festival I got to show some of my photos (similar to this) of the area and meet some of you in person. Even though it was warm, that was pretty cool.

Siesta Key Afternoon

I headed down the road to Siesta Key from my home in Palmetto hoping to catch a good sunset. The clouds are so dynamic that you never know what to expect and as it turned out there was no sunset, however the colors and clouds still put on a good show. It rains so often in summer that most people just ignore it. It rarely last more than fifteen minutes and then you just continue going about your business. Of course I’m making liberal use of the word “business” because that’s about the furthest thing from anyones mind. However the folks on this broken down pier were engaged in the business of fishing, the folks behind me were engaged in the business of sunset watching, and I was engaged in the business of taking it all in and snapping some photos. Have your people contact my people and we’ll do business.
